Concrn Reporter App
Duration: 2 day hackathon
Team: 4 Designers
Skills: UI Design, UX Design, User Research, Sketching
My Role: UI/UX Designer
Challenge: Concrn is a social service network that allows people to report crisis situations so that trained volunteers can be notified and offer assistance. The current report screen is confusing and lacks sufficient information.
Solution: Make the report screen easier to understand while providing more information.
End Product: A report that includes urgency, concerns, gender, age, ethnicity, amount of people, video/photo, and description.
The Design Process
Overview:
I began by learning more about Concrn to understand how they work and what their goals were. Then I looked at their app to identify any issues. Finally, my team and I created a design that addressed these issues while aligning it with Concrn's mission.
The Problems:
-911 does not look like a button (we don't want people to accidentally call 911).
-"Responding to a person?" is worded awkwardly. All reports are about people.
-Current information asks for too little. Need to find a way to be more informative so it can help the trained volunteers have a better idea of the situation.
Improvements Made:
-Made 911 look like a button.
-Separated the concerns into 3 main categories: homelessness, substance abuse, and mental health.
-Added gender, age, and ethnicity.
-"How many people are involved?" in cases where there is more than one person involved.
-"Upload photo/video" to give volunteers a better idea of the situation.
Reflection:
Although we were not able to speak to users to do research, we spoke with the founder of Concern to learn more about the main goal of the app and the vision he had. Using this information, we redesigned the app so that it could help reporters create a report and help volunteers understand it. I learned about the importance of researching, asking the right questions, and speaking with stakeholders in order to understand their goals.
